3 ^{▼▼ Lit Lift up}Turn Your footsteps toward the ^bperpetual ruins;
The enemy ^chas damaged everything within the sanctuary.
4 Your adversaries have ^droared in the midst of Your meeting place;
They have set up their ^eown ^{▼▼ Lit signs}standards ^gfor signs.
5 It seems as if one had lifted up
His ^{▼▼ Lit axes
,} ⁱaxe in a ^{▼▼ Lit thicket}forest of trees.
6 And now ^{▼▼ Lit altogether}all its ^lcarved work
They smash with hatchet and ^{▼▼ Or axes}hammers.
7 They have ^{▼▼ Lit set on fire
,} ^oburned Your sanctuary ^{▼▼ Or To the ground they...}to the ground;
They have ^qdefiled the dwelling place of Your name.
8 They ^rsaid in their heart, “Let us ^{▼▼ Lit altogether}completely ^{▼▼ Or oppress}subdue them.”
They have burned all the meeting places of God in the land.
